As an architect, BArch/LLB (Adelaide), I have worked alongside Alastair as both a client and a colleague. The construction and design sector in New Zealand is vastly different from Australia. It has regulations but there are few tools to enforce these regulations. Over the past eight years since returning from Australia, where I worked and taught in Sydney, Adelaide and Canberra, I have witnessed first hand what true underhand behaviour in the construction industry is on a too frequent basis. Examples of this include misappropriation of cost; falsification of council documentation; building work that is charged for but does not meet code and the list goes on. At this present time I can think of three houses within southern Kāpiti alone where the owners are living in incomplete houses with no internal linings and incomplete cladding whilst they work through the legal process to recoup money from builders and construction companies that truly do not care about their clients. Architecture and building are not a precise science. Though they are expected to act like they are for costing and estimation purposes. Alastair, a qualified and highly recommended QS, navigates this by working closely with his clients. He makes himself available at all times to discuss anything from a concern to a change. I have found him to be fair, equitable and trustworthy. On a personal level he is generous, flexible and personable. As a client what I most appreciated was when working with his team was their professionalism, thoughtfulness and they were a pleasure to have around. Even neighbours commented on their conduct and hardworking natures. We had the pleasure of having Andrew Davis as the principal builder on our house in Te Horo. To date I have not met a more conscientious and honest builder. Mistakes and misunderstandings occur. While working with Alastair mistakes and misinterpretations have occurred. It was how Alastair and his team engaged with these that maintained my confidence in them. They owned their mistakes and were transparent in their communication.

I used Total Building for a number of projects as we were getting our house ready for sale. They built a new deck for us, replaced our driveway lighting and went the extra mile to organize an electrician to do some work not related to our job. The whole team were really responsive. Total building use a portal for messaging and project updates what makes sure that everyone in the same page on progress and timing. All the trades were coordinated by a dedicated project manager which made it so easy. Each job was completed quickly and to a high standard. I made a few last minute changes and they were accommodated really well and without any fuss. They were amazing to deal with. Highly recommend for quick friendly quality service!
